Eight Paper Hats
HATS ARE very important in games of make-believe. You can make a wonderful collection of them. All you need are a few paper bags, some pieces of 12 x 18-inch construction paper, and a little paste.

1. The sunbonnet is made from a paper bag
.
Cut out one long side. The bottom of bag will be the back of bonnet. Turn back the top of the bag to make the brim. Trim brim with lacy paper doilies. Punch a hole in each side near the bottom and fasten a ribbon to tie in a bow under your chin.

2. A crown is easy to make.
Simply make a band of paper about 2x18 inches. Cut saw-tooth edge on one long side of strip. Staple ends together so that band will just fit around your head at the brow. Trim with sequins or bright bits of colored paper to look like jewels.

3. A square little hat can be made by cutting a paper bag about
halfway down.
Fold up edges for a brim, as shown. Poke a long feather in it.

4. The boy in the picture above is making a soldier's hat.
Take a 12 x 18-inch piece of construction paper and fold it in half. With folded edge away from you, take the two upper corners and fold them so that they meet at exact center. Now fold the remaining flaps up, one on each side. Tuck in remaining points, and tape them. You can use newspaper, if you'd rather, and make a whole batch of soldiers' hats.
5. A beanie cap can also be made from a paper bag.
Cut bag in half. Use top half of bag. Gather opening together, and tie tightly with a piece of string. Then fold bottom edges up. Decorate beanie with campaign buttons or bright pieces of paper.

6. A tall clown's hat can be made by forming a cone shape with a 12 x 18-inch sheet of paper.
Paste cone together and trim bottom edge even with scissors. Decorate sides with large polka dots cut from colored paper and pasted on. Make a large pompon out of yarn for the very top.

7. A top hat can be made by forming a large paper tube that will just rest on your head.
Then cut a paper circle to fit over top end. Attach circle to tube with cellophane tape. Cut a brim to fit around outside edge of bottom and fasten on with tape, too. Add a colorful hatband.

8. Make a policeman's hat by cutting a paper band about 4 inches wide and pasting or stapling it together, end to end, so that it just fits your head. Then cut a circle to fit as top and tape into place. Visor at front can be cut to shape and taped firmly in place. Paint hat a dark blue. Add a gold badge at front and a little bit of braid made from thin rope or cord painted gold.
