Make A Paper Mache Clown Mask
For Halloween
This clown mask starts with a 9 inch paper plate as a base.

First make a pattern of your own features ( you learned how on the previous page ). Transfer the pattern to the raised back of the plate. Cut out the eyes, nose and mouth.

Now soak the plate in water for about five minutes. Drain the plate and mold it, by holding it against your face. Bend part of the wet rim under the chin of the mask and fasten it with staples.
Add a nose made of a crumpled wad of paper. Fasten the nose to the face with pasted strips of dry newspaper. Crumpled wads for eyebrows, cheeks, and lips can be attached the same way.
Paint the large color area first. Add fine lines and small spots of color last. Glue on patches of bright red yarn for hair. Staple the collar (made of pleated green construction paper ) to the underside of the mask.
The tribal mask on the first page is also made with a paper plate. For the nose, just cut a slit directly above the opening for the mouth. Then soak the plate in water and mold it to the shape of your face. This mask does not need any crumpled paper trimmings. Decorate it with brown, black and white poster paints.
